Restoring the Gift of Hearing: 2,000 plus Lives Reconnected Through Advanced Micro Ear Surgery (Stapedotomy) at CARE Hospitals

Hyderabad, Apr 09: CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, today announced a landmark milestone in hearing restoration, as Dr. N. Vishnu Swaroop Reddy, Clinical Director, Head of the Department & Chief Consultant – ENT, Facial Plastic and Cochlear Implant Surgeon, has successfully completed over 2,000 Stapedotomy surgeries, restoring hearing in patients affected by Otosclerosis and other complex causes of conductive hearing loss.

Otosclerosis, a frequently underdiagnosed yet treatable condition, causes progressive fixation of the stapes bone in the middle ear, leading to gradual hearing loss. It can affect individuals as young as 8–10 years to the elderly and is more prevalent in women, often worsening during pregnancy. The condition commonly affects both ears and slowly isolates individuals from conversations, workplaces, and social engagement.

This extensive surgical series also includes children with congenital conductive hearing loss, patients with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, and other rare etiologies, reflecting the breadth and complexity of cases managed at CARE Hospitals.

Stapedotomy is a highly delicate microscopic procedure in which the immobile stapes, the smallest bone in the human body, is replaced with a precision micro-prosthesis, restoring sound transmission. When performed by an experienced surgeon, hearing improvement can often be appreciated immediately on the operating table, particularly under local anaesthesia in adults, allowing many patients to avoid lifelong dependence on hearing aids.

Dr. N. Vishnu Swaroop Reddy’s first 1,000 cases were presented at the Asia Oceania Congress of ENT Surgeons (2019) and subsequently published as a main article in the Journal of Laryngology & Otology (Cambridge, UK; founded in 1887) in 2021.

This publication represents – the largest published stapedotomy series from India, the second-largest international series worldwide & among the highest reported success rates globally

Following international publication, patients from across India and overseas sought treatment at CARE Hospitals, leading to the completion of another 1,000+ successful surgeries over the past six years.

Reflecting on the milestone, Dr. Reddy stated, “Many patients seek help only after the second ear is affected, having silently adapted to hearing loss for years. Awareness is critical—Otosclerosis is treatable, and hearing can be restored with timely intervention. Hearing loss quietly erodes confidence, dignity, and human connection. The true milestone is not the number of surgeries, but the moment a patient hears clearly again—often after years of silence.”

Congratulating Dr. Reddy, Mr. Abhinav Joshi, Hospital Chief Operating Officer, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills said, “This achievement reinforces an important message, hearing loss is not destiny. With advanced expertise and timely care, it is reversible. Dr. Vishnu Reddy’s work has built a Centre of Excellence in Micro Ear Surgery and Cochlear Implant Surgery at CARE Banjara, delivering measurable impact and restoring quality of life for thousands. We are proud of this extraordinary contribution to hearing healthcare.”
