Nav Nirman ke 9 Varsh: Uttar Pradesh Achieves Major Solar Milestone, Capacity Rises from 400 MW to 5,000 MW

New Delhi: Mar 23: Uttar Pradesh has marked nine years of transformative growth in solar energy, establishing itself as a leading green energy state in India. From a modest 400 MW capacity in 2017, the state’s solar capacity has surged to over 5,000 MW, driven by progressive policies, large-scale projects, and active public participation.

Key initiatives, including the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’, have made solar energy accessible to households, promoting clean, affordable, and sustainable power. To date, more than 4 lakh rooftop solar installations have been completed, enabling citizens to save ₹1,500–₹3,000 per month and earn additional income through net metering.

Strategic Policy Interventions and Large-Scale Projects

Prior to 2017, limited policy clarity and low public awareness hindered solar energy adoption. The introduction of the Uttar Pradesh Solar Energy Policies of 2017 and 2022 catalyzed a rapid transformation. The state now hosts large solar parks, ground-mounted projects, and extensive rooftop programs, collectively driving the solar sector forward.

Focus on Emerging Green Technologies

Uttar Pradesh is also embracing emerging areas such as green hydrogen to advance energy self-reliance. Pilot projects are underway, including a 0.5 MW green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur by Torrent Power and a 22.5 kg/hour plant in Rampur by Zero Footprint Industries Pvt. Ltd. These efforts align with the state’s ambitious goal of developing 22,000 MW solar capacity under the Solar Energy Policy-2022.

Impact on Households, Economy, and Environment

The solar expansion has not only promoted clean energy but also created employment opportunities in installation, operations, and maintenance. At the household level, solar energy is now powering lighting, appliances, induction cooking, and even electric vehicles, reducing dependence on conventional fuels.

By integrating large-scale solar projects with innovative technologies like green hydrogen, Uttar Pradesh is steadily advancing toward energy self-reliance, a low-carbon future, and its vision of becoming a trillion-dollar economy.
