Guwahati, Sep 7: Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Monday emphasised the importance of strengthening literary and academic ties between Assam and Tamil Nadu, saying exchanges between the two regions can deepen India’s cultural unity.

Addressing students and faculty members at Gauhati University, Radhakrishnan appreciated the university’s initiative to translate Tamil literary works into Assamese. He said he would encourage universities in Tamil Nadu to undertake similar efforts to translate Assamese literature into Tamil.

The Vice-President said language carries the memory, knowledge and identity of a civilisation. Greater interaction between Indian languages, he added, can help people understand different traditions and strengthen the cultural connections that bind the country together.

Radhakrishnan also praised Gauhati University for its contribution to education, literature, science and research. He said the real value of an educational institution lies not only in academic achievements but also in its ability to contribute to society and create meaningful change.

He urged students to use education, research and innovation to address social challenges and contribute to India’s development. He also called upon young people to stay away from drugs and play an active role in creating a healthier and more responsible society.

During the programme, the Vice-President released three books, including Integrated Development: The Role of the North Eastern Council, the fifth edition of Chandra Kanta Abhidhan and Bhupen Hazarika: Hundred Years of a Wandering Song.

He also laid the foundation stone for infrastructure projects worth Rs 110 crore at Gauhati University, marking another step towards strengthening the university’s academic and student facilities.

The Vice-President’s remarks highlighted the role of literature and education in bringing India’s diverse communities closer. He said stronger translation initiatives and academic cooperation can give young people a greater opportunity to discover the rich traditions of different parts of the country while reinforcing the shared cultural values that unite India.
