Let Us Donate Organs, Let Life Continue: Telangana Ranks Second in Organ Donation, but Greater Awareness Is Needed

Aug 12: Every year, International Organ Donation Day is observed on August 13 with a profound message: a person can continue to save lives even after death through organ donation. The observance seeks to create awareness that service to humanity does not end with life; one’s organs can offer hope and survival to others. Organ donation is not merely a medical procedure; it is one of the highest acts of compassion a family can offer to society.

Telangana currently ranks second in India in organ donation, a matter of pride for the State. Yet, much more awareness is required among the public. Hyderabad has emerged as one of the country’s leading organ transplant hubs, supported by advanced medical infrastructure, specialised transplant teams and an efficient coordination network. Successful kidney, liver and heart transplant surgeries are being performed regularly. However, the number of donors remains far below the growing demand. Thousands of patients registered at hospitals continue to wait for a suitable organ.

Among all organs, kidneys are in the highest demand. The increasing burden of diabetes, hypertension, obesity and chronic kidney disease has led to a significant rise in kidney failure. Across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, thousands of patients depend on dialysis two or three times a week to survive. While dialysis is life-sustaining, it is not a permanent solution. Lifelong treatment, physical exhaustion, loss of employment and financial strain place a heavy burden on patients and their families. In contrast, a successful kidney transplant often enables patients to return to a near-normal life.

There is also a substantial need for liver, heart, lung, pancreas and small intestine transplants. Corneal donation can restore sight to two individuals. A single brain-dead donor can save more than eight lives. This is why organ donation is often described worldwide as “the gift of life”.

Several misconceptions still persist in society. Some people fear that the body will be disfigured after organ retrieval or that funeral rites cannot be performed properly. These beliefs are incorrect. Organs are retrieved with utmost dignity and according to strict medical protocols, and families can conduct last rites in the manner they wish. Organ donation is not opposed to any religion; all faiths regard saving human life as a noble act.

Public understanding of brain death is equally important. Brain death means the complete and irreversible cessation of brain function, and recovery is not possible. Although the heart may continue to beat for a short period with ventilator support, organs can be donated during this time with the consent of the family. This is a legally recognised and scientifically established process.

Organ donation begins with a family conversation. Every individual who wishes to donate should communicate that decision to family members in advance. Registering as a donor, carrying an organ donor card and participating in awareness programmes are small steps that can create a major impact. Young people, in particular, should come forward and lead this movement.

Despite the remarkable progress in transplant medicine in Hyderabad, many lives may still be lost if donor numbers do not increase. On this International Organ Donation Day, every family should reflect on a simple truth: even after death, we can give life to someone else. Blood donation saves lives while we are alive; organ donation allows lives to continue after we are gone.

Our heart may continue to beat in another person. Our kidney may free a family from years of suffering. Our liver may protect the future of a child. That is the power of organ donation; that is true immortality.

Let us pledge today to register as organ donors. Let us offer the greatest gift possible — the gift of life — and redefine humanity through compassion.

Become an organ donor. Be someone’s second chance at life.
