Guwahati, Sep 23: Centre for Sight, one of India’s eye-care networks, has strengthened its clinical capabilities in Guwahati with the joining of Dr. Sanjoy Kumar Buragohain, an ophthalmologist with 28 years of experience in the field of ophthalmology.

The addition of Dr. Buragohain will further strengthen Centre for Sight Guwahati’s capabilities in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmic conditions, cataract and comprehensive ophthalmology, helping patients across Guwahati, Assam and the Northeast access specialised eye care closer to home.

Dr. Buragohain completed his MBBS from Guwahati Medical College, followed by MS in Ophthalmology from Assam Medical College and DNB in Ophthalmology. He also pursued specialised training in glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmology at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. His experience spans medical and surgical ophthalmology, with a strong focus on glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology and cataract care.

A key area of focus at Centre for Sight Guwahati will be the comprehensive diagnosis and management of glaucoma, a condition that can gradually damage the optic nerve and, if not detected and managed in time, may lead to irreversible vision loss.

Glaucoma evaluation may include intraocular pressure measurement, gonioscopy, corneal thickness assessment or pachymetry, optic nerve evaluation, visual field testing or perimetry, and Optical Coherence Tomography for assessment of the retinal nerve fibre layer and optic nerve. These investigations help doctors assess the type and stage of glaucoma, monitor progression and determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

Depending on the type and severity of glaucoma, treatment may include eye-pressure-lowering medications, laser procedures and surgical interventions. Surgical options can include Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery, trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage devices or valve procedures, based on the patient’s clinical condition. Laser procedures  like  laser peripheral iridotomy may also be considered for appropriate patients.

Dr. Buragohain’s expertise in neuro-ophthalmology will further strengthen the evaluation of patients with vision problems linked to the optic nerve, brain and neurological pathways. Neuro-ophthalmic conditions may present with symptoms such as unexplained reduction in vision, double vision, optic nerve abnormalities, visual field defects or other complex visual disturbances that require detailed assessment to identify the underlying cause.
