Bengaluru, July 29: Aster RV Hospital has successfully performed a highly complex simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant on Mr. Meghraj Maruti Kattimani, restoring his health and independence after years of battling Type 1 diabetes and end-stage kidney disease. The case was particularly challenging as the patient presented with multiple life-threatening complications, including dialysis-dependent kidney failure, uncontrolled diabetes requiring lifelong insulin therapy, recurrent severe hypoglycaemia, seizures, a stroke, and heart failure. Despite these significant clinical complexities, the multidisciplinary transplant team successfully performed the dual-organ transplant, giving him a renewed lease on life.

Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 15, Mr. Kattimani's condition progressively worsened over the years, eventually resulting in end-stage kidney disease requiring dialysis three times a week. Even with intensive insulin therapy, his blood sugar levels remained difficult to control, placing him at continued risk of serious complications. The coexistence of Type 1 diabetes, dialysis-dependent kidney failure, insulin dependence, cardiovascular complications, and neurological events made him a high-risk candidate requiring meticulous pre-transplant optimization and coordinated multidisciplinary care.

His deteriorating health was further compounded by recurrent episodes of severe hypoglycaemia, seizures, a stroke, and heart failure secondary to advanced kidney disease. The physical demands of frequent dialysis, coupled with lifelong insulin dependence and multiple medications, had also imposed a significant emotional and financial burden on him and his family.

Following a comprehensive evaluation and approximately three to four months on the transplant waiting list, he successfully underwent a simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant.

Despite the patient's high-risk clinical profile, the procedure was completed successfully, and he experienced a smooth post-operative recovery without major complications.

Today, nearly six months after the transplant, Mr. Kattimani has made a remarkable recovery. He no longer requires dialysis, insulin injections, or even the five blood pressure medications he depended on before surgery. Both the transplanted kidney and pancreas are functioning well, allowing him to resume an active, healthy, and independent life.
