Kochi, Oct 07: Aster Medcity, Kochi, have successfully performed a total knee replacement using a total ceramic knee implant on a 53-year-old man from Ernakulam. Being the first time in Kerala, the procedure offers a long-lasting solution for younger patients who need joint replacement

The patient had been suffering from severe right knee pain for three years. When the pain began to restrict his daily activities and the knee developed a visible deformity, he consulted the doctors at Aster Medcity. A total knee replacement was advised to correct the deformity, relieve the pain and help him return to an active life.
Considering the patient's relatively young age, the team opted for the total ceramic knee, one of the latest implant technologies available. The implant is expected to last for a very long time, possibly for the patient's entire lifetime.
"For younger patients, the longevity of the implant is the biggest concern. The total ceramic knee has the lowest wear rate among all knee replacement materials, which significantly improves its chances of lasting a lifetime," said Dr. Vijaya Mohan S, Senior Consultant and HOD, Orthopaedic Surgery, Aster Medcity, Kochi.
Along with the use of ceramic material, the instrumentation has also improved greatly, ensuring better alignment and balancing of the knee prosthesis. Ceramic is the most biocompatible material available for knee prosthesis, with zero chance of metal allergy. The lightweight and better-aligned prosthesis will help the patient regain his range of movement faster.
