Global Risks Keep Indian Markets Under Pressure, Festive Demand Offers Selective Support

New Delhi, Oct 5: Indian equity markets are likely to remain sensitive to global developments in October, with geopolitical tensions, elevated crude oil prices and interest-rate uncertainty continuing to influence investor sentiment. At the same time, the upcoming festive season could provide selective support to consumption-driven sectors, according to a market assessment.

The ongoing geopolitical situation involving the US and Iran remains a key risk for global markets. Any further escalation could keep crude oil prices elevated, potentially adding to inflationary pressures and influencing expectations around interest rates in the United States.

Higher global bond yields could also weigh on emerging-market equities, including India, as investors may prefer safer assets and reassess allocations towards riskier markets.

However, domestic factors could provide some relief. The upcoming Navratri, Dussehra and Durga Puja celebrations are expected to support consumer spending, potentially benefiting segments such as consumer staples, consumer durables and automobiles.

Financial services could also see improved activity as banks and non-banking financial companies support consumer financing during the festive period. Housing finance companies could similarly benefit from stronger demand for housing-related credit.

The recent weakness in Indian equities has largely reflected global factors rather than India-specific concerns. The market is now expected to closely track the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy decisions, interest-rate outlook and liquidity conditions for further direction.

Global fund flows remain another important factor. A shift of emerging-market investments towards technology-driven markets in East Asia has affected foreign investor interest in Indian equities. However, analysts believe that relatively attractive valuations could create opportunities for investors with a medium- to long-term perspective.

Market participants are also watching the possibility of a reduction in geopolitical tensions. Any progress towards a US-Iran ceasefire could ease concerns over crude oil supply, lower bond yields and improve global risk appetite. On the other hand, a significant escalation could prolong pressure on equities and increase inflationary risks.

Despite near-term uncertainties, several sectors continue to attract interest from a longer-term perspective. Banks, power companies, housing finance, infrastructure, engineering and construction, railways, logistics and business services are among the areas that could benefit from India's structural growth story.

Power demand, in particular, is expected to receive support from expanding electric-vehicle adoption, infrastructure development and the rapid growth of artificial-intelligence data centres.

For investors, October is therefore shaping up as a month of contrasting signals. Global risks may keep volatility elevated, but India's domestic consumption cycle, festive spending and longer-term infrastructure and investment themes could provide pockets of resilience.

The market outlook will ultimately depend on how global geopolitical developments, crude oil prices, bond yields and monetary-policy expectations evolve alongside India's domestic economic fundamentals.
